Compare the 2017.5 Nissan Altima vs 2017 Toyota Camry

2017 Nissan Altima vs 2017 Toyota Camry

Serving Bessemer, AL, Tuscaloosa, and Hueytown

With decades of existence and continued refinement, the Nissan Altima and the Toyota Camry are among the most popular four-door sedans around. Either one is a remarkable choice for customers looking for a no-frills ride with suitable fuel economy numbers, a reputation for good reliability, and a comfortable driving feel. While the Camry has been around for about a decade longer than the Altima and has been a perennial best-seller, the rest of the segment has slowly but surely closed the competition gap over the past few years. And for 2017, it’s easy to make a case for the Altima being an overall better choice than the Toyota offering.

Fuel Efficiency

The standard engine on the 2017 Nissan Altima—a 2.5-liter inline 4-cylinder (I4)—is not awfully big or a gas guzzler. And it helps that it is paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT), which does not use gears, but rather relies on a continuous range of effective gear ratios, which saves energy. As a result, the Altima’s fuel economy numbers are 27 mpg in the city and 39 mpg on the highway, which are great for a midsize four-door sedan. Although the 2017 Toyota Camry also uses a 2.5-liter I4, it is paired with a regular transmission (6-speed automatic). As a result, its peak fuel economy numbers are 24 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway; that’s 3 less mpg and 6 less mpg, respectively.

Performance

For more power, you can go with either vehicle’s 3.5-liter V6 engine, which is available on the upper-level trims. On the 2017 Nissan Altima, the V6 provides an output of 270 horsepower and 251 lb-ft of torque. The 2017 Toyota Camry V6 only produces 268 horsepower and 248 lb-ft of torque, which is 2 less horsepower and 3 less lb-ft of torque.

Front Crash Prevention

In terms of safety, you can’t go wrong with either the 2017 Nissan Altima or the 2017 Toyota Camry. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) names each one a “Top Safety Pick Plus” vehicle, which is the highest distinction awarded by the organization. And that’s mainly because each sedan aced all five crashworthiness test from the IIHS, scoring the best possible rating of “Good.” However, the Altima also distinguishes itself on the Crash Avoidance & Mitigation Test, which measures the ability of a vehicle to prevent or reducing the severity of front crashes, especially with optional equipment. With available or upper-level advanced safety features like predictive forward collision warning and smart forward emergency braking, the 2017 Altima scores the best possible rating of “Superior” in front crash prevention. IIHS rates the 2017 Toyota Camry at a few notches behind its Nissan counterpart, thus giving it a lower "Advanced" rating.
